This trip was one of my scariest. A week or so before we went, the Taliban blew up the front of Kabul’s main police station and killed dozens of young police trainees. We almost canceled the trip. But I am so glad we didn’t. We learned a lot, thanked and encouraged our partners, and had an unbelievable experience. After we left, the Taliban later attacked our hotel – twice – and killed half a dozen guests including Americans. They also attacked our partner hospital and killed several people including a visiting doctor. The most amazing thing about that attack was that after the gunman was finally shot, the hospital staff rushed him into surgery and saved his life – just moments after he killed several of their colleagues and patients. This is a Christian hospital saving thousands of Muslim lives a year, the leading OB/GYN hospital in Afghanistan. An unbelievable story of faith, compassion, and turning the other cheek.
